The extremely talented Vodafone Fiji 7s rugby team experienced the cities of Glasgow and London on the final leg of the 2014 HSBC World Series and were under the chiropractic care of John Stoker from The London Chiropractic Clinic based in Hammersmith, West London whist they were in the UK.
The Fiji 7s are one of the most popular and successful sevens team in the world. Currently ranked No 3 and since the end of 2013 have been coached by the former England 7s coach, Ben Ryan. Ben is a great advocate of chiropractic and has introduced new methods of training, nutrition and overall wellbeing to the team. Ben brought the team to John’s clinic for a full work up and treatment prior to their games.
Uniquely, the Fiji 7s team currently has only two professional players. The majority of the players have full time jobs and intense training commences shortly before tournaments. As elite athletes their bodies are pushed to their limits and prior to visiting the clinic only two players had experienced chiropractic care.
The players receive regular physiotherapy care so they were intrigued but also a little apprehensive prior to treatment but once a couple of players had been adjusted it started a buzz throughout the team and they were hooked! Given that they had just flown from the other side of the world and the closeness of the Glasgow and Twickenham matches the recovery time from injury was short. John worked closely with the Team Physio finding out the players strengths and weakness. The players were impressed by their post adjustment results, including one player who nearly doubled his grip strength. The impact of receiving regular chiropractic care would offer huge benefits to their overall performance given that many players have had years of biomechanical imbalance.
The players mingled with patients during the week as they came in for their adjustments. The IRB film crew and photographer popped in during the week too. John and Ben were interviewed by the IRB Sevens TV channel discussing the benefits of chiropractic care.
Support from Fiji 7s Management Team
John, as an official member of the Fiji 7s Management Team, supported the players at Twickenham during the two days of the final tournament of the 2014 World Series adjusting the players in between their games.
The Fiji 7s are certainly a team of raw talent with an immense love of the game. We really got to know the team and were humbled by their genuine kindness and despite their high profiles in the sport they shied away from the limelight. We learnt about their life at home and their afternoons with their families swimming with dolphins – they must think we are barking mad living in such a built up and busy city! We were sad to see our new chiropractic advocates depart for home but we look forward to welcoming them back next year.
